32541 WO James McNamara
30 Squadron and 31 Squadron, RAAF
Clerk of Coledale, 22 yrs old
Killed in Action, But, New Guinea, 13th July 1944
Originally joining the Army with the 34th Militia Bn, James applied for Aircrew and enlisted into the RAAF in July, 1940.
After completing his aircrew training, James was posted as an Air Observer to 31 Sqn, south of Darwin in August, 1942. Flying in two-man long range Bristol Beaufighters, James navigated and provided rear defence for the pilot on 19 long range attacks against the Japanese in Timor before being posted back No. 5 Operational Training Unit as an instructor in July, 1943.
In March 1944, Warrant Officer McNamara began a 2nd operational tour with 30 Sqn. Flying Beaufighters again, now from New Guinea, he completed 20 attacks on Japanese shipping and bases. On the 13th July, with pilot Flight Lieutenant Clifford Satchell of Melbourne, James took off for harassing attacks along the coast near Muschu Island. Strafing Japanese barges, they were hit by anti-aircraft fire. A brief radio message ‘I think I’m on fire’ was heard before the aircraft crashed into the sea near the village of But.

NX24192 SGT Roy Nicholls
2nd/18th Battalion, AIF
Clerk - Sydney Water Board, born of Scarborough, 37 yrs old
Died as Prisoner of War, Thailand - 10th of December 1943
Born in Scarborough, Roy enlisted from Belmore. With his clerical background he was allotted to the Pay Cell for the 2nd/18th Bn. With the increasing militarisation of Japan, Roy embarked on the RMS Queen Mary arriving in Singapore on the 18th February 1941.
On 8 Dec, Japan invaded Malaya with the 2nd/18th Bn occupying defences on the East Coast of Malaya, first meeting the Japanese on the 26th of January. By the 1st of February, the 2nd/18th Bn was defending the northwest coast of Singapore with the 2nd/20th Bn. On the evening of the 8th, these two battalions were overrun by 16 Japanese Battalions and despite stoic fighting withdrawals they entered captivity on the 15th.
Initially, interred with in Changi Prison on 15 May, Roy was stuffed into the hulls of two cargo ship with 3,000 other prisoners for 12 days of dehydration, starvation and dysentery.
Disembarking in Burma, Roy was put to work on the infamous Thai-Burma Railway construction. Malnutrition, disease, brutality and relentless work, destroyed the prisoners.

424963 SGT Victor Caiger
2 Service Flying Training School, RAAF
Clerk, born of Coledale, 18 yrs old
Killed in Flying Accident
1 mile west of Laverton, Victoria
4th of August 1943
Victor enlisted into the RAAF on the 10th of Oct 1942 and completed initial training at Bradfield Park. Victor was selected for aircrew as a pilot and undertook basic flying training at Narrandera followed by advanced pilot training at Point Cook, flying DH8 Tiger Moths and Airspeed Oxfords.
He earned his pilot wings on the 28th of July 1943.
On the 4th of August 1943, Victor and SGT Kenneth Dawson were passengers of an Airspeed Oxford piloted by F/Sgt Thomas Harley Hart. At approximately 1630 a Boomerang fighter collided with the Oxford. The Boomerang’s wing cut through the rear of the fuselage of the Oxford, causing it to fatally spin into the ground.
